GFCI devices primarily protect against which hazard?

Electric shock caused by ground faults

GFCI devices are designed to protect people from electric shock caused by ground faults. They constantly monitor the current flowing in the hot and neutral conductors and look for any imbalance, which indicates that some current is leaking through an unintended path, such as a person who is touching a live part and the ground or water. When such a leakage is detected, the GFCI trips and cuts power in a fraction of a second, dramatically reducing the risk of serious shock. This protection is different from overcurrent protection (which prevents circuit overloads), arc-fault protection (which addresses arcing hazards), or fire prevention from short circuits, so the main function is rapid disconnection to stop electric shock from ground faults.

Overload of circuit

Arc flash

Electrical fire from short circuits
